We the undersigned request that Wokingham Borough Council revoke their decision to appropriate the land at Elms Field and maintain the current open parkland amenity space for the use of all residents of Wokingham now and in the future
This is a new petition to try to save the open green space at Elms Field in Wokingham. We are trying to overturn the council decision to 'Appropriate' the land at Elms Field in 2007. In this Appropriation action Wokingham Borough Council councillors decided the land was "no longer required for the purpose for which it was held".
If you signed our recent previous petition about the planning application at Elms Field, thank you very much. You are helping to show Wokingham Borough Council that people do not want Elms Field built on.
It's very striking, from the number signing the petition and the comments made by you all, that Elms Field is still highly valued and used by the community. You don't want it to be built on. You want it refurbished and maintained as a community open space.
Your comments have been shared as an objection to planning and will be considered as part of the planning process. We had hoped to use this petition to trigger another debate on the subject of Elms Field, but because planning is open this won't be allowed by the Council. There is no way to influence this so we have looked for an alternative way to force a debate.
We have therefore decided that the campaign now needs to focus back on the Appropriation decision made by the council in 2007. This was when the Council voted to approve redevelopment of Elms Field in principle because they deemed it was no longer needed for its current purpose. The Council managed this process correctly and legally but there was very little public awareness of it at the time. It was managed very quietly and once the decision was made, the ability to develop Elms Field became an option.
We wish to assert that this decision did not represent the views of the community, whom the council are elected to represent. We are therefore opening another petition which will definitely trigger a council debate on the Appropriation decision. We want to trigger this debate as soon as possible.
We are all tired of trying to oppose and influence this development at Elms Field. However we need a huge push to get 1500 validated signatures so that we can trigger this debate. You can sign if you live, work or are educated in the Borough. We need your name, email and postcode to validate your signature so please ensure you have entered those details into change.org before signing. Around 1/3 of the signatures on the last petition didn't have this info so couldn't be used. If you work in the borough but don't live here, please confirm your work postcode in the comments box.
We hope we can count on your support with this new petition and will update you on the campaign in due course. Please sign the petition and encourage family, friends and neighbours to do the same. Let's protect Elms Field for future generations to enjoy.
