Rainbow Community Crosswalk in Woburn

Rainbow Community Crosswalk in Woburn
The Issue
Recently, the rope holding the pride flag in Woburn was cut down. Given the nature of the removal of the flag, it's not a stretch to assume it was done as a sign of disapproval for it being flown. We are living in a time where it has become more commonplace for people to express their negative feelings towards marginalized groups. As a city, Woburn does not stand for this. As a result, the community is seeking a more permanent Pride installation in the form of a simple, rainbow-painted crosswalk in the center of town (around the traffic circle). The goal of this petition is to show city officials that there is widespread support for this.
Everyone is welcome in Woburn.
Additional information on community crosswalks:
Special painted crosswalks are a great way to represent a neighborhood. They can be used to showcase a community's unique culture and history or just liven up an intersection with artistic and colorful stripes.
For safety purposes, we expect to have this crosswalk meet the following standards. These have been adapted from other cities' guidelines.
- The crosswalk must be at a location where there is already a marked crosswalk.
- The crosswalk must be at a raised crosswalk, raised intersection, or location where a vehicle is already required to stop, either due to a stop sign or traffic signal.
- To the extent possible, the crosswalk should be on shorter width streets at intersections. This will help extend the life of markings, and limit overall square footage, and bring cost down.
- The crosswalk design must include the two white horizontal markings with standard design and reflectivity to mark the edges of the crosswalk and ensure it meets minimum standards.
- The City Traffic Engineer will review each artwork to determine their appropriateness at the intersection.
- Community groups are responsible for all costs associated with maintenance.
We hope to discuss this at the next traffic meeting on July 16 and come up with next steps, guidelines, and a path forward.
