Let Krispy Kreme in Nevada know how important it is to have Krispy Kreme certified kosher.
The Issue
As of October 14, 2020, Krispy Kreme in Las Vegas, NV did not renew its kosher certification by its Kashrut certification company, KOA. In doing so, Krispy Kreme has lost a major clientele–the entire kosher consuming Orthodox Jewish community. Also, the kosher consumer has lost a valuable resource in Las Vegas.
For a very long time, Krispy Kreme has been certified kosher not only in Nevada but all over the USA. It is the pastry we serve in our homes to guests and family and at our celebratory occasions: the holiday of Chanukah, birthday parties, fundraisers, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, school events, communal gatherings, and weddings. As one of the only Kosher fast-food chains, the Jewish community has grown to rely on the availability of Krispy Kreme for these many events, and so much more.
Kosher certification is a level of food supervision that meets the Jewish dietary standards. Essentially, Orthodox Jews can only eat food with sufficient Kosher certification. Jews make up less than 2% of the US population and only 15% to 20% of that 2% keep kosher. However, over 40% of packaged foods and beverages sold in the US are labeled as kosher. Kosher certification is the top label claim on foods and beverages, according to market research firm Mintel, beating out the ever-present “gluten-free” label and even allergen claims. Other groups also seek out kosher certified products such as Krispy Kreme. Muslims buy kosher certified products for religious reasons when Halal certification is not available. Many consumers go for kosher foods for completely non-religious reasons. Some gravitate toward kosher products for positive health or taste perceptions, or for vegetarian reasons. The word “kosher,” has connotations for health and cleanliness.
The Nevada Jewish community is one of the fastest growing Jewish communities in the country. When these new residents find out that there are Krispy Kreme stores in the area they seek them out. When friends and relatives visit from out of town, Krispy Kreme stores are a “destination spot” for them. This is also true for the kosher consumer tourists visiting Las Vegas.
By not renewing the certification, the kosher consumer and other groups, no longer have access to fresh delicious sugary melt in your mouth kosher donuts.
