Demand Accountability from WotC after recent Allegations
The Issue
In the last few months a series, of allegations and realities have come to light related regarding Wizards of the Coast and D&D. Half-hearted apologies and claims that they will do better are not enough when they continue to profit off bigoted material, fail to effectively diversify the game, and defend abusers. We all love D&D, but we must set the standard for an inclusive and safe space for players.
Here is a list of incidents we demand accountability and responsibility for:
- engaging in a diversity hire in order to look good and then treating that employee badly
https://www.tor.com/2020/07/06/wizards-of-the-coast-freelancer-quits-due-to-hostile-work-environment/ - demonstrating prejudice against lgbtq+ individuals when rejecting Curse of Hearts
https://twitter.com/deathbybadger/status/1285940555617271809?s=21 - poorly addressing sexual assault claims of high level staff
https://awesomsticks.com/2020/05/23/editorial-trim-the-fat-abusers-in-the-ttrpg-community-need-to-go/
These are just D&D specific things. There have been other problems with Magic of the Gathering as well. Wizards of the Coast has released a statement containing mostly justifications and gimme proposals, but continue to justify and make excuses (https://dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/diversity-and-dnd)
The time for change in the nerd community is now. We can not continue to support non-inclusive organizations. Fans of D&D and creators of fantasy games should feel safe, supported, and included regardless of race, class, sexual orientation, disability, or gender. We deserve better.
Here are a list of action items we Wizards of the Coast can use to rectify their mistakes:
- Issue a public apology & fire those who have been perpetrators or defenders of sexual assault
- Hire a team of people dedicated to improving diversity in d&d
- Discontinue offensive, outdated gaming material such as "Oriental Adventures" and older versions of games that capitalize of stereotypes of marginalized communities
- Instate a mandatory sensitivity training for employees to help avoid issues like this in the future
Until these action items are fulfilled, I will no longer be supporting D&D or Wizards of the Coast, and I encourage anyone else to do the same.
D&D has always felt like a game where me and my friends felt safe to explore anything. But recent reveals about the nature of Wizards of the Coast leave me feeling frustrated and isolated. Let's demand better from our content creators and make a space that is inclusive and safe for everyone.
