The John Mason Statue, located on the historical Palisado Green, has been controversial since its arrival to Windsor in 1996. Due to Mason’s role in the Pequot Massacre and his participation in the capture and enslavement of remaining Pequot tribe members, consisting mostly of women and children, he will continue to be a divisive figure and a source of tension within the town. In order to foster unity and to respect the early history of our town, as well as respect its diversity, we call on the Windsor Town Council to request that the State of Connecticut relocate the statue from its pedestal on the Palisado Green to the property of the Windsor Historical Society. With this action, the statue can be preserved, protected, and displayed as an artifact that allows for a thoughtful, more thorough explanation of its history. We hope that an accurate and detailed depiction of the entire history surrounding Mason’s statue will help the town move forward and focus on other pressing issues.
