It is time to take action and tell our representatives Big Oil should pay a windfall profits tax and stop all oil subsidies.

ExxonMobil the world’s largest company by market value, posted its largest profit in almost three years as soaring gasoline prices fueled discontent among consumers and policymakers. Exxon said that its first-quarter net income jumped 69 percent to $10.7 billion. Shell, BP, and Chevron also announced similar skyrocketing profits totaling $36.5 billion in profits.

Beneficiaries of such a windfall certainly should not be the recipients of billions in government subsidies. Even more fundamentally, there is an obvious response to the windfall profits of the oil companies: a windfall profits tax. The government should tax the windfall profits of the oil giants, and invest the money in renewable energy programs, so that we reduce our dependence on oil and dirty energy.
