Stop Bourne Academy from taking over Sir John Gleed School.

The Issue

We want to stop the changes that will take place in September when Bourne Academy and Sir John Gleed School become partners. As students, these changes will massively change our school lives. Each and every one of the 1,570 students that attend Sir John Gleed School are important and our voices should be heard.

First of all, changing the name of the school to "Spalding Academy" has angered many students and citizens because the word "Gleed" has always appeared in the name of the school and is part of the community. It might not mean much to those at Bourne Academy, but we are proud of the name of our school. The word "Gleed" has been in the schools name ever since it opened in 1941. To strip us of this name is unjust and wrong. The name change will not add anything positive to the school. It will not make it look better, it will just strip our previous name which has so much history and meaning behind it.

Secondly, a huge portion of students are unhappy that their forms will be abolished and they will be mixed in with other year groups. This is a huge mistake and isn't going to make social skills in the school any better. First of all, younger students in year 7 will possibly be bullied and taunted if they are mixed into a form with year 8's and 9's. Form time is a place where children should feel calm and safe among a group of their peers. This change will not break the boundary between the year groups, it will only separate them even further as older students will not communicate with younger people in their forms. Also, students are used to their form groups at this point. They have grown and progressed together, they have made friends and are comfortable with their forms. Therefore, isn't abolishing those forms and throwing the students into a weary and nervous situation a  preposterous idea? This will especially effect students in years 10 and 11 as it will create a level of unneeded stress and uncertainty while taking their exams. The GCSE period is massively important because it sets up students for the rest of their lives. Surely creating more stress is just going to effect their grades in a negative manner? Many students have also grown attached to their form tutors. A lot of students share a certain level of trust with their form tutors and their form tutors are usually their first point of call if there is an issue with their school life. Changing the form layout is going to destroy these relationships and  a lot of things will go unreported due to students not having trust or faith in their new form tutor.

  • Thirdly, another thing which has concerned many students is the apparent time table changes after September.  Our current timetable is perfect for our students and the change is unnecessary. We already have a perfect balance with our timetable and it does not need to be messed with.   Why fix something that doesn't need fixing?

There are many more issues with the changes that Bourne Academy propose which will hinder students confidence and performance in school. Changes which don't bring anything positive to the school. I understand the tough situation that the leaders of the Sir John Gleed school have had to face but it is no excuse to change everything we know and love about the Gleed.

Please consider the opinions of students, citizens and others on this matter and change some of the policies that you are bringing into our school. This effects the students, not you.
