Sheriff Tom Knight must file charges against William Brumby for fatal shooting.

The Issue

To Honorable State Attorney 12th District Mr. Ed Brodsky

To Honorable Sheriff Thomas M. Knight

We are asking for law enforcement in Sarasota County, Florida to file charges against William Brumby.

Mr. Brumby is on record to admitting fatally shooting his son, Stephen Brumby on Sunday July 3, 2016 at 3:15pm while at the High Noon Gun Range at 4583 Bee Ridge Road located in Sarasota, Florida.  Both he and witnesses claim it was an accident.

The State of Florida legal code is clear: under Homicides statute 782.03, a fatality involving the use of a deadly weapon is NOT considered an excusable homicide.

Anyone in Florida who owns and uses a firearm understands that it is a deadly weapon whose sole purpose is to end life.

In acceptance of this knowledge, they also accept that if they should kill another human, whether intentional or unintentional, while using a deadly weapon, that they have committed a crime in Florida.

There is no protection from the law, no matter how tragic the circumstances may be. Furthermore, Sheriff Knight has failed to release the reason why his office has not filed any charges against William Brumby.

We strongly urge officials in Sarasota County, to enforce and uphold Florida law and to press charges against William Brumby and to charge him with involuntary manslaughter for the death of Stephen Brumby.

He deserves to have a criminal record-a felony charge that would prevent him from ever being able to acquire firearms again.

Stephen Brumby deserves justice, his father does not deserve to be spared--he was not the victim, his son was. When anyone murders someone, part of the burden they bear is to live with the fact they took a life. The other half of that equation, is serving time for their crime for the life they took and to the community who has been robbed of that person.

We cannot become a nation, where it becomes acceptable under ANY circumstance to kill an innocent person with a fire arm, claim it was an accident and then expect impunity from the law.
