Will you allow it? Stop the Spread of Unverified Information.
The Issue
We live in an era of information overdrive, and with this comes the precarious spread of misinformation. As someone who, alongside many others, have been shocked and disturbed by the increasingly
frequent instances of starkly false and misleading information propagated by major platforms like CNN, Facebook, “Twitter” , and others, it is a time for change!
From my experience in school, my classmates and I were taught meticulously to cite my sources, to validate the authenticity of information to prove it true. Nowadays, it appears this critical practice is dwindling, paving the way for harmful, unverified propaganda that not only alters global perspectives on America, but detrimentally influences young minds.
False information is a significant issue. A study by MIT revealed that fake news spreads six times faster on social media than true news. Even more alarming, false information had a 70% greater chance of being retweeted than true stories (Source: MIT study, 2018). This study unequivocally underlines the severity of the issue we face today.
The dissemination of false information can lead to harmful consequences. People question their influence and the importance of their votes. They question the integrity, truthfulness, and fundamental values of our country. This is unacceptable and demands immediate rectification.
Every vote matters! The accuracy of our information, and citing our sources, goes a long way towards determining the future of our country. We must come together to petition for compulsory source verification for all disseminated information. No more with the he said she said false information. If media has AI it could have programs to stop the spread of false information. Help us recuperate our trust in the media and assert our unity against misinformation. Please, sign this petition for the truth. “WE ARE THE PEOPLE!”
