Will Smith: Publicly apologize to Chris Rock for assaulting him at the 94th Academy Awards

The Issue

Dearest Will,

There's no denying you are America's "Fresh Prince." For decades, you've been an inspiration, role model, father figure, and mentor to many of us who grew up with you in the 90s and thereafter. Your undeniable wit, charm, and boyish sense of humor have been a treasure trove for your fans worldwide.

Tonight, although we celebrate your Oscar win for your performance in King Richard and further laude you for cementing your legacy as both a legendary actor and beloved rap artist, your behavior at the 94th Academy Awards is another matter entirely.

As your loyal fans, we see you at your very best and guide you at your very worst. This evening, after what seemed like a tumultuous rollercoaster of events, we now unanimously reach out to you to inform you, in no uncertain terms, that your public assault on Academy Host Chris Rock was wrong.

While we sympathize with your beloved Jada Smith for her ongoing struggle with Alopecia, we categorically denounce violance as the answer to any verbal provocation or dispute. Whether you were defending your wife's honor or not, there was no possible justification for swinging at Chris Rock.

Will, you're no stranger to comedy. As the playful jokester of Bel-Air, the number of one liners you've dished out at others' expenses is innumerable. Yet, the greatest irony of all seems to be that somehow Chris Rock, a comedian, can take a hit better than Will Smith, another comedian, can take a joke.

What is perhaps just as, if not, more egregious than your outright attack was the disingenuous apology you delivered during your award acceptance speech. Sure, you apologized to the Academy, your fellow nominees, and arguably the public at large. You preached about love, and protecting others, and fighting for family. But despite your pleadings and tears to be invited back to the awards ceremony next year, you forgot the one person--the only person--who mattered most in your entire speech. Your victim: Chris Rock.

Will, you know better than the rest of us that bullies never prosper. You've battled them both on and off screen for almost as long as you've been an actor--from french reporter dudes trying to kiss you IRL to being picked on in the Philly school yard by your bullies on tv. But what you did was so antithetical to the very tv character that put you on the map, it's almost as if you're not even the real "Will Smith."

In case you've forgotten, the "Will Smith" of the Fresh Prince got in "one little fight" and his mom got scared, so she sent him to live with his uncle and auntie in Bel-Air. Don't make the same mistake Will. Don't get in fights, Will. Don't get sent away, far away, from the Academy, from Hollywood, and most of all, from your most loyal fans who want nothing but to see you keep climbing higher into your career. Uncle Phil taught you better than that. And we as your fans know you are capable of more than that.

No one is perfect. And you'll bounce back from this. But first, we need to see you take responsibility for your actions and learn from your mistake. Therefore, in light of tongiht's events, we the Will Smith fandom call upon you to issue a public apology, in front of all of your fans, specifically to Academy Host and comedian Chris Rock for your physical assault on his person at the 94th Annual Academy Awards.

If the event you are unable to do this, then we as your fandom pledge to part ways with you at this juncture in your life until a future time when you have reflected upon your conduct and are ready to be a mature, genuine, law abiding citizen and productive member of society once more.
