Ban Gill Nets on Chickamauga and Nickajack Lakes

The Issue

TWRA began a program in 2000 to stock Florida Strain Bass in Lake Chickamauga which has been extremely beneficial to the fishery and has quickly jumped Lake Chickamauga up the list of top fisheries in America. However, the lake is very close to a point where we are going to see a decline in fishing quality, and a lot of this can be contributed to the use of gill nets on Lake Chickamauga. There are countless pictures, videos, and accounts of fisherman getting caught in nets with their boats to then only discover dozens and dozens of trapped or decaying fish that are anywhere from 4-12 pound fish. The killing of one four pound bass eliminates thousands of bass from entering our lake from its future spawns. How many non-targeted fish are dying in nets each and every year? Its in the thousands. If we don't stop this now we will be talking about Chickamauga in the past tense (Remember when...?). Lake Guntersville is a perfect example of this. It has been able to sustain the recreational pressure and remain a top lake for years and gill netting isn't allowed on that body of water. If you like to fish or care about the future of fishing please sign this petition so that your voice can be heard, and so that our kids and grandchildren can enjoy the fishery that we have.
