Zoals zovelen in de kunst- en cultuurwereld, zijn wij ontsteld door het nieuws over het ontslag van Lorenzo Benedetti als directeur van de Appel. Uit alle reacties op het ontslag blijkt onvrede over de beslissing van het bestuur en een onverkort vertrouwen in de artistieke kwaliteiten en bijzondere verdiensten van Benedetti. 

Het bestuur van Stichting de Appel heeft nog geen steekhoudende verklaring afgegeven of verantwoording afgelegd over de redenen voor het ontslag. De tot nu toe aangevoerde formele redenen voor het ontslag zijn onvoldoende transparant om ons, vrienden van de kunst en van de Appel te overtuigen.

Wij vinden dat Benedetti de kans moet krijgen om zich op langere termijn als directeur van de Appel te profileren. De eenzijdige beslissing van het bestuur om Benedetti te ontslaan - inclusief de bij die beslissing gehanteerde management retoriek - dreigt de bijzondere positie die de Appel al veertig jaar inneemt in de (inter)nationale kunstwereld te ondermijnen. Dat willen en kunnen wij niet laten gebeuren! Wij eisen derhalve de terugkeer van Lorenzo Benedetti als artistiek directeur van de Appel en als het huidige bestuur deze terugkeer in de weg staat, eisen wij het aftreden van dit bestuur.

Like so many in the world of arts and culture, we are appalled by the news of the dismissal of Lorenzo Benedetti as director of de Appel. The reactions to the dismissal clearly reveal the dissatisfaction with the decision of the board, and a full trust in the artistic qualities and special merits of Benedetti.

Until now the board of Stichting de Appel hasn’t given a convincing explanation or justification regarding the underlying reasons for the dismissal. The formal grounds for dismissal are not sufficiently transparent to convince us, friends of the arts and of de Appel. 

We believe that Benedetti should have the opportunity to develop himself as director of de Appel on a longer term. The unilateral decision by the board to dismiss Benedetti - including the management rhetoric used by that decision - threatens to undermine the special position that de Appel has held for forty years in the (inter)national art world. We cannot let this happen! We therefore demand the return of Lorenzo Benedetti as artistic director of de Appel and if the current board blocks this from happening, we demand the resignation of this board.
