The Issue

I've had several close calls while biking because drivers seemed oblivious or indifferent to my presence on the road, even when I had the right of way. Biking should be a safe, eco-friendly option, but inadequate bike lanes and inattentive drivers create perilous conditions for cyclists and pedestrians alike.

The bike lanes in our community are simply not wide enough, forcing cyclists into traffic lanes where they compete with cars for space. This isn't just frustrating—it's dangerous. Inadequate bike lane widths fail to provide cyclists the space they need to ride safely, putting them at risk of accidents and injuries. Every street should have properly marked and ample bike lanes to provide safer routes for bikers.

Furthermore, our crosswalks need to be safer. Current crosswalk signals are insufficient as they fail to announce clearly and loudly enough for both pedestrians and drivers to realize when someone has the right of way. This lack of an audible signal puts pedestrians at risk of being hit by a car, especially when distracted or reckless driving is involved.

To create a safer environment for cyclists and pedestrians, I urge local authorities to take the following actions:
1. Expand existing bike lanes to ensure cyclists have enough room to ride safely.
2. Install new bike lanes on every street to provide consistent biking routes across the community.
3. Upgrade crosswalks with loud, clear audio signals alerting both drivers and pedestrians when it is safe to cross.

These changes won't just enhance safety—they'll encourage more people to bike, reducing traffic congestion and contributing to a healthier community. By signing this petition, you're supporting safer, more accessible roads for everyone. Please join me in advocating for these necessary improvements to protect cyclists and pedestrians alike.
