The Issue

Wicklow Surf Life Saving is a voluntary sports body affiliated with Irish Water Safety.

From humble beginnings, in 1993, W.S.L.S athletes have competed in National, European and World Championships, winning medals in these categories. They are trained by a group of highly dedicated and trained Volunteers.

Training starts at 8 years of age and continues into adulthood with 4 categories.

Lifeguards who patrol some of the most popular and dangerous beaches on the East Coast of Ireland are trained through W.S.L.S.

These are some of the best sea swimmers in Ireland.

Training happens twice a week from June until the end of August, in the evenings, from approx. 6pm to 7.30 when Brittas Bay South Carpark is not full, but often empty.

All families are charged 4 Euros at the barrier for 1 hour 30 minutes training.

Our Volunteer Coaches are also charged the same fee. Yes, volunteer coaches are also charged.

In no other national sport in our area are athletes and their families charged parking fees for training.

We would like Wicklow County Council and the Department of the Environment to acknowledge the value of this vital community sport.

They must understand that this activity BENEFITS Wicklow County Council. They depend on high calibre lifeguards.

W.S.L.S prepares Lifeguards who will save lives.

These lifeguards will be employed by Wicklow County Council in the future.

We need to be allowed to park without being charged.

Our athletes should be supported. Our  community volunteers deserve to be supported.

Joined up community thinking must prevail here.

Stop charging Athletes and Volunteers at Brittas Bay South Carpark.
