I am here today to tell you why social media shouldn’t be banned for those under the age of 16. I believe this issue hits close to home for many young people and their families across the UK.

First and foremost, social media is a powerful tool for learning and communication. Personally, I learned about my local cadets through Facebook, which played a vital role in my social development and helped me find my community. Local sports teams and various community groups also thrive on platforms like Facebook, allowing young people to connect with peers and partake in community events.

In addition, social media is an invaluable resource for education. Many students rely on platforms like YouTube and Reddit for school revision, explanations of difficult concepts, or discovering new study methods. These platforms provide access to a wealth of educational content at the click of a button, creating an informal support network where young individuals can assist each other in learning and development.

Entertainment is another crucial aspect of social media that often gets overlooked. For young people, these platforms are a source of fun, creativity, and sometimes even relaxation. They host communities that build bonds over shared interests, like music, arts, and sports. Banning access to social media could mean stripping away not just a source of entertainment, but communities that provide a sense of belonging.

There are justified concerns about safety and mental health in relation to social media usage; however, denying access altogether is not the solution. Instead, we should focus on educating both parents and young users on responsible and safe usage of these platforms. Implementing age-appropriate content filters and promoting digital literacy from an early age can equip young individuals with the tools they need to navigate the online world safely.

Completely banning social media for under 16s takes away essential opportunities for learning, socializing, and personal growth. Rather than imposing a ban, let’s work on making the internet a safe, inclusive space for everyone.
