Why School Should Start Later At Pentucket Middle High School
The Issue
To: Pentucket Regional School District Administration and School Committee
We, the students, parents, and concerned community members of the Pentucket Regional School District, respectfully request a change in the school start time for Pentucket Middle High School. The current start time of 7:35 AM is too early for adolescents and negatively affects students’ health, academic performance, and overall well-being.
Why School Should Start Later
1. Teenagers Need More Sleep
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), middle and high school students should start school no earlier than 8:30 AM. Teenagers naturally fall asleep later due to biological changes in their sleep cycles during puberty. Forcing students to wake up as early as 5:30 or 6:00 AM to catch buses or get ready for school leads to chronic sleep deprivation.
2. Academic Performance Improves with More Sleep
Studies show that students who get enough sleep do better in school. They have improved memory, focus, and problem-solving skills. Starting school later helps students arrive more alert and ready to learn, which can lead to better grades and test scores.
3. Mental Health Benefits
Lack of sleep is linked to increased levels of stress, anxiety, and depression in teens. Starting school later would give students a better chance at getting the 8–10 hours of sleep recommended for their age group, helping improve their mental health and emotional regulation.
4. Safety Concerns
Sleep-deprived students are at higher risk of car accidents, especially teen drivers. Students who walk to school in the dark during winter months also face additional safety risks. A later start time would help reduce these dangers.
5. Other Schools Have Already Made the Change
Many school districts in Massachusetts and across the country have already moved to later start times and have seen positive results. For example, schools in districts like Nauset and Ashland now start after 8:00 AM and report improvements in student health and academic success.
Our Request
We respectfully ask the Pentucket Regional School District to form a committee that includes students, teachers, parents, and administrators to review the current start time and explore the feasibility of moving the start time to 8:30 AM or later.
