Petitioning President of Emory University James W. Wagner

Why is Napolitano speaking at Emory's commencement? Stop her!

On May 9th, Emory University President, James Wagner, invited Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano to be a speaker and address the 2011 graduating class at their commencement ceremony.

President Wagner said; "As our graduating students set forth to shape their own lives and careers, they will be well served by the example of Janet Napolitano, who has used her exceptional intelligence, integrity and humanity in behalf of positive transformation in the world."

Napolitano is responsible for the separation of thousands of families. Instead of the University taking a stand with students, it is endorsing their deportations.  Take action to demand that Napolitano not be allowed to speak!

After you sign the petition, call President Wagner at 404.727.6013 and demand that he immediately rescind Secretary Napolitano's invitation to speak.

Sample Script: "Hi. I am calling to demand that President Wagner immediately rescind Secretary Napolitano's invitation to speak.  Thank you."

Letter to
President of Emory University James W. Wagner
As the President of Emory University I ask that you immediately rescind Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano’s invitation to speak for the 2011 graduating class.

I believe that this invitation does not go hand in hand with the reputation and standing of your University. Given the current climate in Georgia, I believe the message you are sending is that the destruction of our communities is seemingly okay.

You are quoted as saying; "As our graduating students set forth to shape their own lives and careers, they will be well served by the example of Janet Napolitano, who has used her exceptional intelligence, integrity and humanity in behalf of positive transformation in the world."

Janet Napolitano has indeed served as an example, an example of how to completely destroy the immigrant community in this nation. As Secretary of Homeland Security, she is responsible for the deportation of thousands each day. Her ‘intelligence’ has been used to come up with new and innovative ways of criminalizing the immigrant community. Is this really a path you wish upon your graduating class?

It is far better for you to serve as a leader in this struggle than one who continues with the status quo. Earlier this year, your university apologized for its role in slavery; will you too be issuing an apology for the endorsement of the separation and dehumanization of thousands of human beings?

I immediately demand that you rescind Secretary Napolitano’s invitation to speak at the 2011 commencement ceremony.

Sincerely,
