Why aren't we allowed to give way to emergency vehicles?
Why aren't we allowed to give way to emergency vehicles?
The Issue
This has never happened to me but I keep on reading about people getting fined & given points for moving out of the way of an emergency vehicle sounding it's siren & flashing the blue light.
It is only natural to assume the emergency services take priority over all other considerations, in other words they are supposed to be trying to save somebodies life, put out a house fire or catching a criminal who's a menace to society. In giving way it may mean driving over the line at a red light, pulling up onto the pavement, moving into the bus lane during the restricted time or doing something else that under normal circumstances would be illegal, unnecessary & admittedly unsafe.
But if every road user is aware of the vehicle making a loud, audible sound they'll know what it's for & usually make way for it. If you have to drive through a red light the traffic coming from the left or right will also have to stop for it & give way anyway & how can any driver be expected to just wait till the lights turn to green when they've got an ambulance behind them & they assume somebody's dying in the back of it & needs to get to hospital?
If you think you'll have to drive onto the pavement & you can see it's clear of pedestrians it's what you'll do to let the fire engine past. If there's a person in the way, toot your horn, wind the window down & shout 'Move! I'm letting the fire engine past!'
A politician on the radio said, 'No. You mustn't do that. The driver of the emergency vehicle will be taught the skills in getting through the traffic without you having to break the law.' So if the police car has a line of traffic in front waiting at the lights, a row of cars to the left & an island with a fence on running up the middle of the road to the right he's going to have skills to get through it? How? We can see when a vehicle is boxed in & can't go anywhere & when somebodies life is at stake you'll want to do anything to allow the emergency vehicle to pass.
If your manoeuvre does risk causing an accident the chances are it'll only cause damage to vehicles. Not every accident causes injury. The two parties can sort it out & the fire engine can go & put out that fire. If you wait at the lights for them to turn green it can mean the difference between life & death.
There could be a little boy or girl trapped in a burning building & we're not going to wait for the lights to turn green to let that fire engine to pass.
Politicians listen to us & don't punish us for doing the right thing.
Please sign my petition & force politicians to change the laws on this.
In the meantime if you are fined something like for this, don't let it put you off. If you find yourself in the same situation again do the same thing & pull your car into any position to let that ambulance passed. There'll be a dying person who needs it.
