Whole Foods Employees need a living wage, unpunished sick days & decent schedules.

The Issue

Whole Foods is an expensive place to shop. Whole Foods is the top provider of natural and organic foods in the U.S. Whole Foods is frequently held up as a model of corporate and social responsibility and is on "Fortune"s Best Companies To Work For 2014." Yet Whole Foods employees in the stores, handling consumable groceries, are unable to take a sick day without losing pay and receiving negative demerit points towards their attendance. This puts co-workers and customers at risk for illness.

Average Whole Foods employees cannot afford to shop at the stores, even with their discount cards. Most start part-time, at around $10 per hour, which although is above the national minimum wage, is considered poverty level in all regions. Many part-time workers have been begging for full-time status for years. They are unable to easily find second jobs due to the bizarre, inflexible scheduling practices. Whole Foods employees receive weekly schedules 2-3 days before the week starts, with unpredictable hours and many receive "clopening" shifts, (where they close at 11 p.m. & must be back to work at 6 a.m. or earlier) making it impossible to plan life events or make additional needed income.

I have moved on to a much better job with excellent management and positive reinforcement for employees, who are actually treated like adults when it comes to managing their own time. I left behind a lot of great friends with low morale and I would like to see Whole Foods make their lives better or simply lose the carefully crafted false image of being a great employer.

Please see my Huffington Post, which could be published in July 2014: "The 8 Harshest Things I Discovered While Working For Whole Foods." If Huffpo passes, I will have to publish elsewhere. More later....

The Bottom Line: Shouldn't Whole Foods uphold their own "Core Value" of supporting team member happiness?
