How can neglect get so out of hand that many animals die and others are so emaciated that can't stand on their own? Please note that neither convicted person was sentenced to jail time. "Veterinarian Clyde 'Renny' Shoop was found guilty on 10 of the 11 counts of animal cruelty after investigators said they found severely emaciated and dead animals on his property in January." "The veterinarian’s wife, Kim Shoop, pleaded guilty to two counts of animal cruelty to avoid a summary trial and the other charges were withdrawn by the commonwealth." "Police have removed 16 horses from the property since Jan. 20, when they received a tip about a farm with emaciated and dead horses." "On Jan. 22, police searched the property, and found nine of the 16 horses in critical condition. They also found six dead horses, one beneath a burned mattress, and two in a pit with the remains of other burned animals. It wasn't just horses removed from the property. Police also took a pig, a calf and a turkey during the first search; 20 sheep and goats, as well as three dogs during the second." "'There were multiple animals dead on the property that had already died of starvation so it was just shocking," Lori McCutcheon with Last Chance Ranch said." "As part of her plea agreement ex-wife Kim Shoop was ordered to pay $2140 in fines and restitution, but she did not receive any jail time." "Dr. Shoop was also assessed fines, cost and restitution. The amount to be determined. He will not servce any jail time." "Dr. Shoop was previously charged with animal cruelty in 2009, after an animal control officer accused him of keeping four horses in poor conditions. Those charges were dropped." "He was also reprimanded by the state Board of Veterinary Medicine in 2002 for practicing for six months with a lapsed license." Stronger laws with best practices for early intervention are needed.
