We the people of the Whitehall – Coplay school district respectfully request the following actions from the Whitehall-Coplay School Board & Administration:

1.      We request the board members to publicly address their decision to vote against the recommendations of the Whitehall-Coplay School district’s superintendent, building principals, staff, teachers Union, and parent survey responses.  As elected officials, the residents deserve an official explanation for the decisions made that directly and indirectly affect the health and safety of the community.  We are requesting a public address from the following board members:  William P. Fonzone, Sr., Patty Gaugler, Nichole Hartman, George Makhoul & Joseph Shields.

We request the Whitehall-Coplay School Board as a whole to address the following questions:

  • The administration has indicated that Whitehall-Coplay School Districts cannot accommodate a full student body at a safe CDC recommended 6-foot distance.  Where and how, specifically, does the board propose housing the extra students?
  • Can the board ensure adequate PPE for all Whitehall-Coplay School staff members? Are there guaranteed contracts in place with suppliers and have the funds been secured for such purchases?
  • Can the board ensure adequate PPE for all students should they forget and/or lose their masks during the school day?
  • Can the board ensure adequate CDC approved cleaning products for all areas of student engagement, including but not limited to: classrooms, hallways, cafeterias, bathrooms, common areas, gymnasiums, libraries, buses, offices, sports complexes
  • Can the board present the report indicating adequate ventilation for each building to the public?
  • Can the board assure the public that there will be adequate staff (current staff and an adequate substitute list) to monitor student safety in the classrooms, hallways, buses, offices, and any other areas utilized by staff or students?
  • What are the board’s recommendations to accommodate students who do not wear masks (i.e. where will students be placed in already overcrowded classrooms)?
  • How specifically does the board propose to support the administration in accommodating an additional (approximately) 215 LCTI students who will be added to the high school student body for lunches and either a half or full-time day?
  • Can the board provide an added cost analysis to the taxpayers for all added expenses, including but not limited to: staff, PPE, cleaning supplies, ventilation upgrades, cost of students choosing Whitehall’s Virtual Program, cost of students choosing to pull out the district and attend an independent charter school, price of additional lunches for LCTI students for the first quarter of the school year? Can this cost be compared to the cost if the Whitehall-Coplay School district was using the hybrid model for the first quarter? Can this cost be compared to if the Whitehall-Coplay School district was all online for the first quarter?

2.      We request the administration to resurvey the parents of the school district with all available options to include the full traditional model, hybrid model, Learning at Home Program, and Whitehall-Coplay Virtual Learning Program.  We request the presentations from all building administrations to be made publicly accessible and hyperlinked within the survey.  We request this accessibility to allow the parents to make an educated and informed decision based on the facts provided.   We request this action be taken, analyzed, and publicly posted to the school district's website by August 17th. This date aligns with the district's deadline for parents to confirm their choices.

3.      Lastly, we request the board members in support of a revote to request President Wayne Grim call a special meeting. The purpose of the meeting would allow the board to call a motion for a vote on the reopening plan based on the survey responses in the best interest of the district.  We request this vote based upon the information that was not previously available to parents and the board members when they were asked to make a vital decision on the health and welfare of the children and administration.
