Whispers from fields: The unheard voices of the Filipino farmers.

Whispers from fields: The unheard voices of the Filipino farmers.
The Issue
Filipino farmers are considered as the pillars of the nation's food provisions, however, many of them face multiple obstacles in achieving their goals when it comes to livelihood opportunities. One of the main problems of the farmers is meeting their financial needs resulting from low incomes due to many factors, such as pricey production costs, deceptive trade practices, and limited access to credit opportunities. Such challenges often result in a cycle of debt and difficulty adopting innovative farming operations.
Additionally, there is another factor that affects farmers from earning justifiable income and that is the unhealthy market competition. As other products, especially the imported ones, tend to cost cheaper, farmers are even more challenged to compete with the price, which results to another problem. Furthermore, natural calamities add up to more frustration felt by local farmers as it destroys crops and infrastructures that assist in the production of goods. Also, another reason of the farmers' loss of profit is the usage of old-fashioned techniques and facilities due to the government's lack of support.
It is very important that our Filipino farmers are empowered by amplifying their voices and making sure that they get a prioritized representation in the government. Farmers should be given topmost privilege to express their grievances, voice out potential solutions to problems and earn equal rights as the other branches of the government. Furthermore, our leaders and policymakers should create an open door policy and engage with them in a grassroots level to have first hand experience of what our farmers are truly exposed to, so that leaders could understand the real deal of what our farmers are really facing.
If these challenges continue to exist for many years to come, the future of Philippine agriculture may appear unfavorable. Not to mention that the newest generation tends to feel disinterested in the farming industry due to the aforementioned reasons. Most importantly, the government should focus more on policy reforms, agricultural development and strategies, and efficient livelihood programs to better assist our low income farmers and ensure adequate food supply for the years that follows. With this in mind, the future of the next generation will surely be promising and that more people will be persuaded to consider the farming industry as an encouraging venture for all Filipinos. With this in mind, people will surely appreciate the sweat and labor and hear our unseen and voiceless heroes of fields.
Tandaan, ang pagtulong sa magsasaka ay pagtulong sa ating lahat!
(Remember, helping our farmers helps us all!)
