Female Football Players Demand Respect from the NFL and a Professional League of their own

The Issue

For nearly 100 years, the National Football League (NFL) has supported men’s professional football, evolving into a multi-billion-dollar enterprise. Men’s pro football is one of the most lucrative sports in the world, with every NFL franchise currently valued at over $1.5 billion. So why have women been shut out of getting on the field? Why is there a WNBA, and not a WNFL?

In the U.S. over 3000 women compete with each other every year on about 100 football teams across the country. The teams play full-contact tackle football with the same rules as men. None of the women’s teams are supported by the NFL.

Current female football players are often following their childhood dream of playing football. They are driven by a passion for the game and don’t receive any salary. They even have to pay for their own travel in many cases in addition to contributing to other team expenses.  These women athletes now deserve support from their male counterparts in the NFL in a manner similar to the NBA’s support of the WNBA. If you are not familiar with women’s football, watch a trailer for Victorious https://vimeo.com/148916313  an award-winning documentary directed by Robert Mac about the D.C. Divas and their recent back to back National Championship victories.

By signing this petition, you are supporting an important change in elevating women's tackle football to become a professional sport.  The four demands below are being made to ensure that women are afforded a more equal opportunity to pursue their love of football in their own league.

  • In 2020, an eight-team WNFL would be launched – a Women’s National Football League – in conjunction with the 100th anniversary of the NFL.
  • The NFL Players Association & the NFL would agree to begin supporting the WNFL with an annual grant of $20 million out the many billions of dollars of revenue it generates each year.
  • All NFL teams would adopt a women’s football team in their area, and each would support the growth of their sister team; Taxpayer-funded facilities that are now being used exclusively for men’s football should be open to women’s football players as well.
  • USA Football, which annually receives millions of dollars from the NFL, currently charges female players a hefty fee to represent their country at the national level. We demand that female football players be treated equitably and receive payment in line with their male counterparts when representing their country.

Help support the hundreds of female football players fulfill their passion by having them fairly treated by the NFL. Sign this petition now. #WhenWNFL
