The Issue

"Bring care closer, make lives better"

Access to healthcare should be a right, not a privilege, but many Filipinos still face big barriers to getting medical help. About half of the population cannot reach primary healthcare facilities within a 30-minute standard travel time, meaning many people delay or forego treatment because clinics and doctors are too far away. The country also spends a relatively small portion of its economy on health (around 1.5 % of GDP), which is much lower than many neighboring ASEAN countries, resulting in fewer hospital beds, limited medical staff in rural areas, and underfunded public health services.

These gaps impact everyday life: not all communities have enough doctors or nurses, and rural health units sometimes don’t have a single physician or nurse available. Furthermore, even when facilities exist, only a small percentage of them can deliver full primary care services, which pushes many patients to skip local clinics and go straight to overcrowded hospitals instead.

Youth and adolescents also face unique challenges. Experts point out that teens are often overlooked in healthcare programs, missing essential vaccinations and preventive care because of gaps in service delivery and awareness. This makes them more vulnerable to infections and health risks that could be prevented with better access to regular medical support.
