Taiwan’s democracy is under threat—not from external forces, but from within. The justice system, once meant to protect the people, has become a tool for political suppression, silencing those who challenge the ruling power. The case of Ko Wen-je is a glaring example of this abuse.
A former mayor who saved the city billions, Ko Wen-je has been unjustly detained, humiliated, and denied his basic right to defend himself. Meanwhile, those truly in power manipulate the system and remain untouchable. His persecution is not about justice—it is about eliminating political opposition.
Even his basic human dignity is being stripped away. His wife, who tries to bring him meals, has shared heartbreaking accounts of how food is deliberately smashed before reaching him. This is not just about withholding food; it is a calculated act of psychological torment. This level of cruelty has no place in a so-called democracy.
The charges against him defy logic. Political donations he never personally handled, concert profits he never took, and real estate transactions twisted into “evidence” of corruption—all while others in power remain exempt from scrutiny. The principle of “innocent until proven guilty” is nothing more than a hollow statement in Taiwan’s current system.
And now, even freedom of speech is under attack. A prominent YouTube influencer who supported Ko Wen-je has had their channel abruptly shut down without warning. Silencing independent voices and restricting online platforms are the tactics of authoritarian regimes—not a democracy. If Taiwan’s government can shut down dissenting voices today, who will be next?
If this can happen to Ko Wen-je, it can happen to anyone. Taiwan’s justice system is no longer about fairness; it has become a weapon of control. This is a dangerous path, one that threatens the very foundation of Taiwan’s democracy.
We Call on the International Community to Act.
We urge democratic allies, human rights organizations, and freedom advocates worldwide to take a stand. Taiwan cannot claim to uphold democracy while engaging in blatant political persecution and media suppression.
We demand:
1. An immediate end to Ko Wen-je’s unjust detention and political persecution.
2. Judicial transparency and fair trials that uphold true democratic principles.
3. Accountability for those who weaponize the legal system for political gain.
4. International monitoring to prevent further abuses of power.
5. The restoration of free speech, including reinstating unjustly removed YouTube platform and protecting independent voices.
Taiwan’s democracy is at a crossroads. Either we stand up now, or we allow authoritarianism to take root under the disguise of justice. We refuse to be silent. The world must know the truth.
