Dear President Trump,

First of all, thank you for your kind birthday wishes!

We extend our heartfelt congratulations on your inauguration as the 47th President of the United States on January 20, 2025.

We are writing to bring to your attention a deeply troubling issue regarding the state of justice in Taiwan, specifically the case of Dr. Ko Wen-Je, a distinguished figure who has been unjustly targeted. Dr. Ko is a renowned doctor who devoted much of his life to saving thousands of lives before transitioning into public service as the Mayor of Taipei, Taiwan’s capital city. He later emerged as a leading figure in Taiwan’s political landscape, representing a third political party and becoming a presidential candidate.

However, his political success and independent stance appear to have made him a target of political prosecution. Dr. Ko has now been detained for a second time for the tenor over 4 months without substantive evidence to justify such extreme measures. Despite the principle of being presumed innocent until proven guilty, he is being treated as though he is already a convicted criminal.

The parallels between Dr. Ko’s experience and your own challenges with politically motivated accusations are striking. His case underscores the misuse of the judicial system to silence political opponents and prevent the rise of alternative voices in Taiwan’s democratic process. Dr. Ko’s forced step down and detention raise serious concerns about the erosion of democratic values in Taiwan.

Adding to the injustice, certain media outlets have leaked details of the investigation, creating public bias and fostering an environment of fear and bullying for those who dare to speak in his support. This not only tarnishes Dr. Ko’s reputation but also erodes trust in Taiwan’s justice system and its ability to safeguard democratic principles.

It is heartbreaking to imagine Dr. Ko, a father and respected figure, spending the Lunar New Year separated from his family while enduring political persecution. This is not just an injustice to one individual but a warning sign for Taiwan’s democratic integrity.

I urge you to consider using your voice and influence to bring attention to this case and advocate for fairness, justice, and democratic principles in Taiwan. Dr. Ko’s story is a reminder of the importance of protecting political diversity and upholding the rule of law in all democratic nations.

Thank you for your time!
