Stop speeding down the rural Whau Valley road

Stop speeding down the rural Whau Valley road

The issue

The rural part of Whau Valley is one of the prettiest parts in town. Everyday people use the Whau Valley road to walk their dogs, cycle with the kids, jog and sometimes to go horse riding.

A large percentage of people living down this rural part have little children that love exploring this beautiful part of town we're living in. They love feeding the sheep, riding their pushbikes or playing around the neighbourhood.

We also have all kinds of animals down this road - cats, dogs, sheep, cows, horses to just name a few.

Unfortunately there are reckless and inconsiderate people breaking the law by speeding down Whau Valley Rd, which is a 50km/h zone, almost every day.

Here are some common occurrences residents of Whau Valley Rd have witnessed and contest with regularly:

-         People test driving bikes they've been working on - without protective gear. Some bikes aren’t even meant for the road at all being without lights, side mirrors or number plates.

-         People speeding down this road going up to the dam to do burnouts or throw donuts.

-         Groups of friends (presumably), each with their own car, tag tailing each other going at excessive speeds.

-         Certain guilty residents of Whau Valley themselves racing home after work.

-         Big trucks, filled with waste or bricks or other building supplies - speeding.

-         Branded vehicles of the council or Energy, Building or Courier companies.

-         Some cars are brand new, some are old and falling apart. Many are so noisy they wake you up in the middle of the night!

Reality is 90% of the people driving down this road are speeding - and it NEEDS TO STOP!

If you live on Whau Valley road, or use this road for daily walks, please sign this petition so that Whangarei District Council can see we need speed bumps to enforce the speed limit. Some older residents of Whau Valley have indicated they’ve approached Council about this very issue years ago, but Council failed to do anything about it.

But times have changed, Whau Valley is expanding and more people are living here now.

It is time for Council to step up and help us make our neighbourhood safe again.

We love our street! We love our children. We love our pets and animals. It's time to slow the hell down!
