Stop the road killing of Cassowaries in Kuranda

The issue

Another road kill of a cassowary chick on Kennedy Highway yesterday morning!!  This has to stop: this chick was number three of the four that Elvis raised.  Where the cassowaries cross that section of the road there are five cautionary cassowary signs. This is the straight road where the Kuranda Range Road ends/begins.  The speed limit on the range is 60 km but still accidents are an almost daily part of the road traffic.
The straight road to the Barron river and the Kuranda turn off has a speed limit of 80 km but it is a downhill road making for increased speed. At this tragic place where the school buses are parked three cassowary chicks have been killed.  At the  last kill the driver didn’t even stop and left a horrible scene.   Parents passing with their children were shocked.

The problem is that this is a state road and falls under the Department of Main Roads.  So the Mareeba Shire can do nothing.   We are hoping that the Wet Tropics Management Authority will have a look at this serious problem. Everywhere there are signs “World Heritage area for the next 8 km” etc.  Should we put a picture under this sign of a leg of a cassowary with all the rest of body gone? Tourists are coming here for riverboat cruises and to see cassowaries but it becomes more and more difficult.  And let’s talk about Black Mountain Road (Kuranda National Park) which falls under the Traffic Authority of the Shire of Mareeba.  Every weekend heaps of people from everywhere come with offroad motorbikes to terrorise the rainforest with noise, speed presenting a further danger to endangered cassowaries here in Kuranda !
