Weston Board of Education (BOE): Postpone BOE’s vote on shared facilities at Hurlbutt Elementary School.

Weston Board of Education (BOE): Postpone BOE’s vote on shared facilities at Hurlbutt Elementary School.
The Issue
Postpone Board of Education’s December 17th motion/vote that proposes:
(a) Moving and increasing (the amount of) shared space at Hurlbutt Elementary School from South House to first floor of North House
(b) Giving entire North House to the Town of Weston
(c) Eliminating the position of Assistant Principal at Hurlbutt Elementary School
(d) Relocating the Second Grade from Hurlbutt Elementary School to Weston Intermediate School (beginning on or before the 2015-2016 school year)
We respectfully ask that this motion be placed on hold until the following has been completed:
(a) A permanent Hurlbutt Principal is in place for at least one full school year
(b) The accurate student enrollment of Hurlbutt is determined with actual enrollment numbers from the next two incoming kindergarten classes
(c) Alternative educational and town facilities have been fully investigated with open community involvement, in the form of new positions to the existing Facilities Committee.
(d) All previous shared space studies be made available to the public
(e) A comprehensive economic analysis be completed and made available for the public to understand the costs and projected savings. This analysis shall not be solely from the Board of Education budget perspective, but for the entire tax base of the Town of Weston.
The BOE has rushed the motion to increase the shared facilities in Hurlbutt Elementary School since it was initially mentioned at a Weston Public Schools Facilities Committee Meeting on May 11, 2012. Information, questions, and answers have frequently changed on this topic, as public interest and awareness has increased.
This petition is not against shared facilities within the Town of Weston.
This petition is asking that the BOE take more time to:
-gather the actual student enrollment for two more Kindergarten classes
-compare renovation estimates with new construction estimates and projected savings
-examine alternative school and town facilities that might be appropriate
-examine the impact on the community and Weston School District
-inform the public.
Thank you
