The Petition
To Mr Anthony Albanese, Prime Minister, and member for Grayndler
Ms Tanya Plibersek, Minister for the Environment and Water and member for Sydney
Ms Catherine King, Minister for Infrastructure and Transport and member for Ballarat
Mr Chris Bowen, Minister for Climate Change and Energy and member for McMahon
We, the Concerned Residents of Western Sydney, demand a curfew on Western Sydney International Airport and noise protections including Aircraft Movement Caps and a Long-Term Operating Plan. We demand legislative protections equivalent to the Sydney Airport Curfew Act 1995 and Sydney Airport Demand Management Act 1997, as established for Kingsford Smith Airport.
Why This Petition Matters
Western Sydney International Airport (WSI) is scheduled to open in 2026 and will operate on a 24/7 basis without any legislative overflight noise protection of a Curfew, Movement (flight) Caps or a Long-Term Operating Plan (LTOP).
Proposed flight paths will directly affect many communities in over 50 suburbs/villages. It will negatively impact many schools, child care centres, aged care centres, universities, medical and dental centres, hospitals (e,g, Nepean Hospital), and over 2.5 million residents.
By 2033 many suburbs in Western Sydney will experience up to 100 overflights per day (1 every 15 minutes), increasing to 200 per day (1 every 7.5 minutes) by 2050. This will have serious impacts on our way of life as well as our physical and mental health. Residents around Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (KSA) are protected by aircraft movement caps that limit the number overflights per hour. There are no limits to the number of overflights from WSI other than what is operationally possible.
Night time flights will subject many people to noise levels of between 60dB and 85Db, significantly disturbing sleep. Imagine a kitchen blender by your bedside. Many studies have shown a relationship between aircraft noise and sleep disturbance. These studies have shown there to be numerous risks to both physical and mental health, including;
- An increased risk of Alzheimer's Disease
- Higher levels of stress and depression
- Difficulty concentrating at work and school
- Slowed cognitive development of children
- Increased likelihood of accidents at home, work and on the road
- An increased risk of Coronary Disease
This airport will result in permanent, significant change to a vast number of peoples’ lives, throughout the Greater Western Sydney area, increasing health risks and posing significant environmental impacts.
