October 20th, 2013 approximately 5:13 p.m., Mario Garcia Sura, 49, drove his car intoxicated at a high rate of speed with a passenger (whom was unidentified) and crashed into a car driven by college student Sreeraj Chandran, 19, who died later at the hospital due to critical injuries. Originally Mario Garcia Sura was facing 25 years in state prison but on April 15th, 2014 Mario Garcia Sura pleaded guilty and his sentencing will be reduced to 5-10 years in state prison. This isn't justice, this isn't humane. In fact this is quite disturbing and appalling. The family and friends of Sreeraj Chandran are suffering a great loss and is infuriated with the courts decision. Something has to be done and Mario Garcia Sura should receive the maximum sentencing he was originally going to receive. Too many innocent lives have been cut short due to individual's driving under the influence and we say that we want to put and end to this type of reckless behavior? This type of crime should be taken far more seriously and plea bargaining shouldn't come into play for this crime resulted in the death of an innocent young man. We as a society should set examples and Mario Garcia Sura should be one. What will happen when he gets out in 5 or 10 years? Does this really change his ways? Does this really show society as a whole to not drive under the influence? Does this make an impacting statement to others? "Change" is the answer, Protect our people, our young drivers. This man does not belong back on the streets in such short amount of time, Mario Garcia Sura is a danger to society and based upon his actions he should serve time.
