The Issue

As Shenango Township residents with children in the West Middlesex School District, we are unable to vote at the West Middlesex Council meetings. However, renewing the contract with the Shenango Township Police Department is critical and necessary for retaining our school resource officers and ensuring the continued safety of our children.

School resource officers have become an integral part of creating a secure environment for our students. They not only serve as law enforcement officers but also as mentors and role models for the students. They play a key role in building trust and fostering positive relationships between the students and law enforcement. The presence of these officers helps to deter crime, address potential issues before they escalate, and create a sense of safety and security that is irreplaceable.

In light of the increasing safety concerns faced by schools nationwide, it is crucial that we do not lose this valuable resource. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, in the 2017-18 school year, about 42% of public schools reported having one or more security staff present at least once a week. Local crime statistics also support the effectiveness of having school resource officers, showing significant reductions in incidents where officers are present.

West Middlesex Council has an opportunity and a responsibility to prioritize the security and well-being of our children by renewing this contract. Maintaining the partnership with the Shenango Township Police Department ensures that our schools remain a safe haven for learning and growth. It not only benefits the students but also strengthens the community’s trust in law enforcement.

Without this contract renewal, the School District would need to create an independent School Police Department, an estimated cost between $75,000-$100,000 per year. Funds which could and should remain otherwise vested in our school district and our children's education.

Join me in calling on the West Middlesex Council to renew this vital contract in the interest of public safety and the betterment of our children’s education. Your signature will demonstrate to the council the community's support for this crucial decision, ensuring peace of mind for parents and safety for all students in the West Middlesex School District. Please sign this petition today and help make a difference in our community.
