West Dunbartonshire Council to axe buses for adults with additional support needs.

West Dunbartonshire Council to axe buses for adults with additional support needs.
The Issue
My son, like many others, relies on the bus service provided by the Bruce Street Adult Day Centre in West Dunbartonshire. This transport is more than just a mode of travel for him; it represents independence, freedom, and the ability to engage with his community without relying entirely on others. The opportunity for him to travel independently to attend the day centre and engage in everyday activities, such as shopping for snacks or enjoying days out, is invaluable. These experiences build his confidence and offer him routine and structure in his daily life.
However, the proposal by West Dunbartonshire Council and the Health & Social Care Partnership (HSCP) to axe the buses threatens this crucial service. This decision risks isolating many individuals who are part of this community. The adults who use the day centre rely heavily on this transport for their mobility and their personal development. Removing these buses runs counter to the principles of inclusion and support that communities like ours should uphold.
The decision feels rushed and without proper consultation with those it affects. It is essential that the Council and HSCP reconsider their decision and engage with stakeholders, especially the families and individuals who use this service, to understand the depth of impact that axeing this transportation would have.
We propose that West Dunbartonshire Council and HSCP conduct a thorough impact assessment, taking into account the views and needs of all service users and their families. Furthermore, they should explore alternative avenues of funding and support that could maintain this vital service without placing the financial burden on the already vulnerable service users.
Please support us in urging the West Dunbartonshire Council and HSCP to re-evaluate their decision and ensure that the buses for Bruce Street Adult Day Centre continue to operate. Sign this petition to keep this essential service running and protect the rights and independence of some of our community's most vulnerable members.
