For decades, The Corners property on Walnut Lake Road just west of Inkster has been a public school and then a nonprofit center. The property includes a ball diamond, a playfield, and mature trees. The property is zoned residential. A developer, Walnut Lake Holdings, has purchased the property and partnered with a builder, Robertson Brothers Homes. They have petitioned the West Bloomfield Township Planning Department and Township Board to change the zoning of the five lots to permit construction of a high-density apartment complex, consisting of 18 three-story buildings with 105 units. The developers want to demolish the school, the ball field, the playfield and the trees.

The proposed project would destroy the character of our neighborhoods. It would have a drastic effect on the landscape, traffic congestion, the privacy of our homes, and the quality of the environment of Walnut Lake. The picture below shows "Park 54," a project with similar buildings now being constructed by Robertson Brothers on Woodward Heights in Hazel Park. Park 54 is about half the size of the proposed Walnut Lake project.  Park 54 is not in character with its surrounding neighborhood. The proposed Walnut Lake project would be much worse.

The Planning Commission and the Township Board can deny the developer's request to rezone the property. We, the petitioners, request that the Planning Commissioners and Township Board deny the request to abolish the existing residential zoning. We urge the Commissioners and Board to protect the character and value of our Township, our neighborhoods, and our properties. Protect Walnut Lake. Please don't allow this project to be built.
