West Bengal University of Technology (WBUT), is a public state university located in Kolkata, India. Founded in 2000 and funded initially by the Government of West Bengal, WBUT provides facilities for the pursuit of degree and advanced-level courses in engineering, management and other professional areas through affiliated institutions and in-house departments. The university has been accorded affiliating university status and is currently functioning through an Advisory Committee constituted by the Chancellor under the advice of the Government of West Bengal, as per necessary transitory provisions of the West Bengal University of Technology Act 2000. The latest survey by Dataquest's annual rankings of best Technical Universities/Colleges in India," WBUT made the top 25 and was ranked 22nd in 2012. 

WBUT currently has 195 colleges under its jurisdiction, with specializations in 29 domains and its horizon encompassing the entire state of West Bengal. 

An announcement has been made by the State government of Bengal to rename WBUT to Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology.

We the students of this university believe this has huge impact on the students in the following areas-

1. Every company performs background check on job change and on university name change it will create more complexity and unnecessary rejection.

2. When students goes out of state and apply job outside West Bengal, the new name will be unknown to many companies and will create problem for no reason.

3. When students travel outside India for higher studies for MS, universities check the previous university name in their system and will not be able to find WBUT.

4. When someone works outside India on H1 or L1 visa they need to go through the background check on initial application and on each extension. Also everyone has to have education evaluation done, so who are abroad already their evaluation might go invalid and will cause time & money to get it redone.

So we all students want to protest this change and inform government that this name change will not benefit them but will create lots of problem for the students who has degree from this university as well as who are currently enrolled.
