Increase the Availability of Online Classes at Wentworth Institute of Technology
The Issue
Since registration week is just around the corner, many students find themselves scrambling to create class schedules that will line up with their work schedules, or other prior commitments. According to recent polls we have conducted, currently 48% of our audience will be at home during the Spring 2021 semester. Whether or not that lines up with the actual statistics has yet to be seen. However, it is clear that a large portion of the student body will be learning remotely next semester.
As remote students begin to configure their schedules for next semester, one major problem has become evident. There are simply not enough online classes. There is a large discrepancy between the amount of in-person classes being offered and the number of online classes being offered. As an example, we will be using Freshman Engineering courses. For the Physics II course, there are currently 19 "In-Person or Combo" labs compared to the 4 "All Online" labs offered. The Fundamentals of CAD & CAM course has 10 "In-Person" classes while there are 2 "Online" classes. Seeing as most Engineering Freshmen take these courses during their spring semester, it is clear to see that the online classes will fill up almost instantaneously.
In short, we ask that Wentworth Institute of Technology increases the number of online classes being offered to provide remote students with more options and flexibility during the Spring 2021 semester.
