The Issue

Throughout the start of the new decade many conflicts have been thrown our way. The largest issue being COVID-19; also known as corona virus.

With nearly 120,000 individuals diagnosed and roughly 4,500 deaths due to the COVID-19 virus we believe it is not only in our universities best interests; but crucial that students be excused from campus and continue out the remainder of the semester from a remote location.

As of Tuesday March 10th, Massachusetts governor  Charlie Baker declared a state of emergency due to the outbreak. As of March 9th there were only 41 reported cases of the virus, although within 24 hours that number has more than doubled. As the states total diagnosed cases nears 100 individuals many universities, public and private, have made the wise decision to transform the remaining semester into a virtual learning environment to avoid possible spreading of the virus.

The colleges of the Fenway are located within less than a mile of the Longwood Medical Area which is home to many hospitals who are housing individuals who are being treated for the virus. Due to the proximity of the schools and hospitals and the potential threat of a violent out break action needs to be taken before it is too late.

Below is a list of a colleges in the greater Boston area which have adjusted their traditional learning approach to ensure the safety and health of their students. (List is as 03/10/2020)
Massachusetts institute of Technology, Tufts University, Suffolk University, Harvard, Babson College, Emerson University, Smith College, and Olin College of Engineering

We request that Wentworth Institute of Technology (and other surrounding colleges of the Fenway), a private university, take precaution like other private/public schools and close (or move classes online) while state officials learn more about COVID-19 to limit the spreading of the virus along students and faculty. Undoubtedly, many of our students and faculty have been exposed to people who are now in quarantine or were previously in quarantine. Students education should not come at the cost of their health. We do understand something so substantial is much easier said than done; however it is foolish to create such a substantial threat to our countries future leaders.
