Housing rights for domestic violance victims
The Issue
I am a domestic violance fleer and have been since the first lock down. I'm a high risk case and welwyn Hatfield council won't accept me onto the housing needs register because I have no local connection to the area even though it has been said that it is to unsafe for me to return to my original borough due to the abuse I suffered from my husband who continuesly breach bail conditions throughout the court case and then breached his restraining order within 6 hours of having it and leaving court. I suffer with anxiety depression and post traumatic stress disorder due to the abuse I suffered however I'm still not classed as vulnerable!.
There simply isn't enough support for domestic violance victims and there isn't support to get into permanent accomodation the local MP also adviced that they reconsider their none priority need however this failed after 3 reviews.
There simply needs to be more help with getting people into a 'safe' place where they feel comfortable. I'm being told that I need to live in the area for 5 or more years in hostels. I believe that if your fleeing domestic violance and can't return to your borough then you shouldn't need a local connection to the area and that you should be accepted onto the housing register if you can prove with police and doctors letters that you have been a victim of domestic violance and it's caused distress to your mental health.
