In 2011 a new obelisk was erected in St. Asaph to memorialise HM Stanley. HM Stanley was well known for his cruelty towards African people. We demand that this obelisk is removed. 

Stanley wrote that 'the savage only respects force, power, boldness, and decision' - and his words informed his actions. Even by the standards of the time, his treatment of African people was viewed as cruel, criminal and inhuman.

The obelisk includes an effigy from the Congo, the country in which HM Stanley shot black children from his boat to calibrate his rifle. It celebrates someone who saw black lives as worth less than white lives. This memorial is a reinforcement of a false history and an insult to all black people who visit the town.

In 2020, there is no place for the celebration of racists, slave traders or colonists in Welsh towns.

Yn 2011 codwyd obelisg newydd yn Llanelwy i goffáu HM Stanley. Roedd HM Stanley yn adnabyddus am ei greulondeb tuag at bobl Affrica. Rydym yn mynnu bod yr obelisg hwn yn cael ei tynnu.

Ysgrifennodd Stanley fod "y dyn milain yn parchu grym, pŵer, hyfdra a phenderfyniad yn unig" - a roedd ei eiriau'n llywio ei weithredoedd. Hyd yn oed yn ôl safonau'r amser, roedd ei driniaeth o bobl Affrica yn cael ei ystyried yn greulon, yn droseddol ac yn annynol.

Mae'r obelisg yn cynnwys delw o'r Congo, y wlad lle saethodd HM Stanley blant du o'i gwch i raddnodi ei reiffl. Mae'n dathlu rhywun a welodd bywydau pobl dduon yn werth llai na bywydau gwyn. Mae'r gofeb hon yn atgyfnerthiad o hanes ffug ac yn sarhad ar yr holl bobl dduon sy'n ymweld â'r dref.

Yn 2020, nid oes lle i ddathlu hilwyr, masnachwyr caethweision neu wladychwyr yn nhrefi Cymru.
