Weclaim Indigenous unity and lands for Lehave, Mi’kmaki and Delaware and associated Clans
The Issue
The history of the Lènni Lënape and Lehave tribes is deeply rooted in the lands now known as Nova Scotia, yet the stories of our ancestors fade like distant echoes. I am a descendant of Chief Benjamin George Gibson, a guiding light of our people who stood as Chief of the Gibson Band of Indians and Captain Pipes Band. Our lineage whispers through the golden fields and lush forests, across the rivers, and over the plains of our ancestral territories, which stretch from the rich soils of Windsor to the vast expanse of the Three Mile and Five Mile Plains.
In the early 20th century, false claims and unjust treaties orchestrated by the government compromised our lands and resources, severing ties that bound us to our homeland and capital. The reclassification and neglect of our copperskinned Indian peoples resulted in generations robbed of their rightful heritage—our lands taken and our unity shattered. The lands and estates that belong to the Unified Lënape Nation and specifically the Lehave Band's rightful territories must be reclaimed, restored and recognized.
The descendants of these proud and resilient peoples stand together, united by our heritage and the undeniable truth that our ancestors walked these lands as stewards long before 1919. The illusion of rightful claims imposed upon our people cannot erase the force of ancestral memory nor silence the voices that call for justice today.
We seek the restoration of the lands, estates, and trust funds to ensure the survival and flourishing of the Delaware Lehni Lenape and Lehave peoples, respecting and empowering us to continue our cultural traditions, languages, and customs. Justice must not only acknowledge past wrongs but actively work to rectify them.
This reclamation is not merely about land; it is vital to the cultural, social, and economic empowerment of our people. Assistance is needed to engage in open dialogues with government officials, recognizing ancestral land rights, and developing a structured plan for the restoration of what was wrongfully taken.
