We won't wait for someone to die! Make Heybourne Crescent and Clayton Field Safe

The Issue

Despite modest road safety measures put in place in 2019 (road markings and small signs), vehicles continue to speed and drive dangerously down Heybourne Crescent and Clayton Field in Colindale, NW9.

Clayton Field was never designed as a through road and has no pavements along most of it.  Drivers who do not live on these roads use Heybourne Crescent and Clayton Field as a cut through between Lanacre Avenue and Grahame Park Way, and often at excessive speeds.  It is only a matter of time before someone is hit or seriously injured.  The route is used by pupils of the 4 schools within 1km, and is adjacent to a park used by families and residents, young and old.

In 2022 the link between Heybourne and Clayton was closed due to building works.  The minor inconvenience for residents was far outweighed by the benefit of reduced traffic flow.  We ask that Barnet consider implementing traffic calming measures such as speed bumps, bollards to narrow the link, flashing speed limit signs, better road markings, or consideration of making it access only at peak times.

If nothing is done to significantly reduce traffic, it will only be a matter of time before a fatality occurs. The danger posed by motorists discourages the use of sustainable travel such as walking and cycling, and increases pollution. To prioritise access for motorists is in direct conflict with the council’s sustainability objects and their declaration of a climate emergency.
