We want ZACHARY LEVI and the cast of SHAZAM to return for SHAZAM 3!
The Issue
We, the undersigned, call on Mr. James Gunn and Mr. Peter Safran to bring back Mr. Zachary Levi and the full cast of "SHAZAM!" and "SHAZAM! Fury of the Gods" for a third "SHAZAM" movie. We strongly oppose the ideas of rebooting the "SHAZAM" character or excluding him from the new DCU altogether.
The first "SHAZAM!" film was a massive success for DC Studios and Warner Bros. Discovery when it was released in 2019. It was hailed by critics and audiences alike as one of the best (if not the best) movies in the DCEU. Mr. Zachary Levi was perfectly cast as the lead, bringing the perfect balance of humor, joy and heroism in a way that no one else will ever be able to duplicate.
Alongside Mr. Levi was a beautifully balanced cast, fully fleshing out the "SHAZAMILY" to protect their hometown of Philadelphia with Asher Angel, Jack Dylan Grazer, Adam Brody, Grace Caroline Currey, Meagan Good, Faithe Herman, Ian Chen, Ross Butler, D. J. Cotrona and Jovan Armand. Audiences fell in love with this charming superhero family guided by foster parents Marta Milans and Cooper Andrews.
To top it all off, Djimon Hounsou rounded out the cast from the Rock of Eternity by turning in the perfect performance as The Wizard, and Rachel Zegler proved she has what it takes to join the Philly Fiascos going forward. Henry Gayden turned in marvelous scripts twice in a row, and it is clear that he could helm the perfect third outing for our heroes. David Sandberg was an incredible director for both adventures, though if he doesn't wish to return, we trust that Mr. Gunn and Mr. Safran could find the ideal replacement. And who doesn't want to hear more of Christophe Beck's triumphant theme song for the SHAZAMILY?
Unfortunately, "SHAZAM! Fury of the Gods" was released during a time of major change at DC Studios, which had a negative impact on the box office success of the film.
Specifically, shortly before the release of "SHAZAM! Fury of the Gods," it had been announced that the DC universe set up in 2013 with "Man of Steel" is being rebooted. While this is very exciting, these circumstances had a very negative effect on the box office success of "SHAZAM! Fury of the Gods." While many of us die-hard "SHAZAM" fans supported the film, the average superhero film fan was discouraged from seeing the film in theaters due to fear that the final four DCEU films of 2023 from the "old regime" will not connect to the new and upcoming DCU.
All of this has done a great disservice to "SHAZAM! Fury of the Gods," as these circumstances alone have discouraged many people from seeing "SHAZAM! Fury of the Gods" in movie theaters. Instead, the average superhero film fan will likely just wait to watch the film when it arrives on streaming services. To make matters worse, this movie was severely under-marketed, with many people completely unaware that the film was even released in theaters.
Nevertheless, "SHAZAM! Fury of the Gods" currently has an audience score of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is the highest audience score on Rotten Tomatoes for any DCEU film in franchise history. Thus, it is clear that people who have seen this movie in theaters absolutely love it. Audiences were once again captivated by the picture-perfect performances delivered by Mr. Levi, who was born to play the role of SHAZAM, as well performances delivered by the entire SHAZAMILY.
Therefore, given the massive success that "SHAZAM! Fury of the Gods" has had with audiences despite being released in a time of massive upheaval at DC Studios, it goes without saying that if a third "SHAZAM!" film was released in the proper way, with audiences knowing ahead of time with certainty that SHAZAM and his family will continue to be permanently connected to the new DCU's cohesive plan, it would be extremely successful with audiences.
And so we, the undersigned, sincerely hope that Mr. Gunn and Mr. Safran understand that the box office success of "SHAZAM! Fury of the Gods" was negatively impacted by being released shortly after the announcement of a near-total reboot of the DC Universe. We believe this should not impact the role that this character has in the new DCU going forward.
Therefore, we, the undersigned, respectfully request that Mr. Gunn and Mr. Safran retain Mr. Levi and the full cast of "SHAZAM!" and "SHAZAM! Fury of the Gods" in the upcoming DC Universe of Films.
It is clear that audiences and fans alike absolutely love these characters and the performances turned in by the actors who have portrayed them across two feature films. Rebooting these characters, or simply excluding them from the future of the DCU, would be a grave mistake.
In the meantime, we will repeatedly promote our desire for the return of these beloved characters by using the hashtags #shazam3 and #leviistherightguy and #weneedthephillyfiascos on social media platforms. We want to see our beloved SHAZAMILY, which has brought so much joy to audiences throughout two feature films, return to Philadelphia for a third time and play an important part in the new and upcoming DCU.
Thank you Mr. Gunn and Mr. Safran - we greatly appreciate your consideration of our request, and we know that you will do a fantastic job leading the DCU forward!
