We Want to Eliminate Unnecessary Plastic Usage in Our School System

The Issue

As an integral part of the education system, we have always strived to instill the principles of conservation in the minds of our students. It is paramount that we emulate the ideals we teach. The issue concerning us relates to plastic, a petroleum product. The U.S burns through millions of gallons of oil due to the production of plastic bags [Source: Environmental Protection Agency, U.S]. The irreparable damage caused to the environment, especially as it serves as home to countless species, is earth-shattering. The use of biodegradable and recycled products as alternatives to plastic is one that we have the ability to utilize.

The UN Environment Programme states that if current consumption patterns and waste management practices continue, by 2050 there will be around 12 billion metric tons of plastic litter in landfills and the environment. Replacing non-degradable plastic products in our schools with eco-friendly alternatives would be a small step towards a significant change.

Our school system can establish a precedent for others to follow suit. We call upon our educational administrators to consider the importance of the switch to eco-friendly alternatives for the benefit of the environment and future generations. Please sign this petition to support the eradication of unnecessary plastic usage in our school system.
