We’ve recently learned that MJ is being forced to leave the JMP at the end of this semester. This news has come as a devastating shock to many of us. MJ has been the heart and soul of welcoming Year 1 students into the university and the JMP.

We’re starting this petition to support MJ in staying - on her own terms - for as long as she chooses.

For over two decades, MJ has been a guiding light to students from Year 1 through to graduation, shaping the JMP experience for hundreds of Newcastle medical graduates. Her unwavering support has helped many of us navigate the challenges of studying medicine and adjusting to university life. She has built the Year 1 course from the ground up.

MJ is more than an educator—she’s a mentor, a confidante, and a source of strength when we need it most. Her absence would leave a hole not only in Year 1 but throughout the entire JMP.

The situation will even impact our learning—several lecturers have said they won’t return to teach unless MJ is reinstated, expressing their disappointment at how she has been treated.

With your support and petition, Ryan and I will meet with the JMP leadership to show how deeply MJ matters - to all of us. We are calling for her role as Year 1 coordinator to be extended until she herself chooses to step away.
