The Issue

Shakina Rush, a dedicated advocate and Overcomer of domestic violence, knows all too well the fear and desperation of seeking safety with limited options. Her personal experiences navigating a system not always equipped to protect have fueled her commitment to ensuring no one else in Philadelphia must endure such fear, loneliness, or uncertainty. Through her work with SHE IS U, INC., she advocates for change and calls upon the City of Philadelphia and community leaders to take decisive action: convert the former Ada H. H. Lewis Middle School into a fully funded domestic violence resource and support center.

Domestic violence remains a pervasive crisis affecting countless individuals in our community, with far too many lives lost or risked due to a lack of accessible, trauma-informed support services. The vacant Ada H. H. Lewis building presents a unique opportunity to create a safe haven and centralized resource hub where individuals impacted by domestic violence can find the support they desperately need.

A DV resource center at the heart of our community will provide vital services, including emergency shelter, counseling, legal assistance, and educational programs for victim survivors and their families. These services will be grounded in real-time, culturally competent, community-based responses that prioritize the dignity and autonomy of those seeking help.

Statistics reveal that 1 in 4 women and 1 in 9 men experience severe intimate partner physical violence, necessitating immediate and coordinated support. Philadelphia must stand as a beacon for proactive solutions to this crisis, ensuring adequate funding and resources are directed to support our most vulnerable citizens in times of critical need.

We urge local government, city officials, and community leaders to unite in transforming Ada H. H. Lewis into a sanctuary of hope, healing, and empowerment for domestic violence Overcomers. Together, we can cultivate a future where every individual feels safe and supported within our community.

Sign this petition to demand the City of Philadelphia transform the Ada H. H. Lewis site into a life-saving domestic violence resource center, changing lives and strengthening our community for generations to come.
