We the undersigned hereby petition Bayside Council to stop Closing Off-Leash Dog Beaches

We the undersigned hereby petition Bayside Council to stop Closing Off-Leash Dog Beaches
The issue
Bayside Council has been gradually decreasing the number of beaches where our beloved dogs can roam freely off-leash.
On August 19, they are meeting to consider their proposal to permanently close Dalgety Road and Watkins Bay beaches to off-leash access. They are citing environmental reasons to protect sea grass in the marine park. This is nonsense as sea grasses don't grow near the water's edge and certainly too deep for dogs to touch. The beaches in question don't have any significant rock shelves for bird roosting.
On top of this they have closed Banksia oval for an indeterminate period and replaced it with a small fenced off area, that is totally inappropriate to concentrate dogs in.
As residents of Melbourne, especially in the Bayside area, we value our beaches and parks not just for personal recreation but as essential spaces for our canine companions to exercise and socialize. These dog-friendly beaches are integral to our community life, promoting not only pet health but also family and community bonding.
Local surveys indicate that over 60% of residents own dogs, and near 75% support maintaining or even expanding current off-leash areas. Off-leash spaces at the beach are not just a luxury; they are necessities for urban living, where backyard space is limited and parks sometimes can't offer the same level of freedom and stimulation for our pets. Reducing these areas impacts not just dogs but the families who cherish these outings as part of their lifestyle.
In communities like ours, where dogs are family, taking away these joyful spaces affects mental and physical well-being, both for pets and their owners. The argument for closures often cite environmental concerns or safety issues, yet studies suggest that with responsible ownership and community regulation, beaches can remain pristine and safe for all users. Establishing clear guidelines and better signage, along with community-led clean-up initiatives, can mitigate these concerns effectively without resorting to closure.
We need Bayside Council to understand that compromise solutions exist: setting designated times for off-leash hours, collaborating with environmental groups to protect sensitive areas, and increasing ranger patrols to ensure compliance. These measures can maintain the delicate balance between enjoying natural spaces and preserving them for future generations.
Join us in urging the Bayside Council to work with the community rather than impose unilateral closures. Let’s aim for harmony that respects both the natural environment and the residents who call it home. Sign this petition and help us keep our off-leash beaches open and welcoming for everyone.
