We Support Sex-Based Facilities in Washington State

The Issue

HB1011 Bill Digest: "HB 1011 Provides that nothing in the state civil rights act: (1) Prohibits a public or private entity from limiting access to a private facility segregated by gender to a person if the person is preoperative, nonoperative, or otherwise has genitalia of a different gender from that for which the facility is segregated; and (2) Prevents a minor child or a person with a disability from entering a facility segregated by gender when the child or person is a different gender from the gender for which the facility is segregated if certain conditions are met." We, the undersigned Washington state residents, along with nationwide allies, announce our support for House Bill 1011 in Washington State. As a diverse coalition of women, we believe sex-segregated spaces for girls and women are essential to our safety and freedom. With the harrowing female reality of male-perpetrated abuse and violence, and the high rate of sexual abuse and assault most females have survived, no girl or woman should have to be around males in the locker room, at a women’s shelter, or in the bathroom. This bill represents a compromise between the interests of women as a sex class and the demands of the transgender movement. It grants males access to facilities originally designated for females as long as they have undergone surgery aimed at making their genitals resemble those of women. This stipulation softens the impact made on girls and women who experience fear, anxiety, and involuntary visceral trauma responses, including those rooted in PTSD, at encountering males in intimate spaces in which girls and women feel especially vulnerable. While we totally oppose the agenda of the Republican Party, we reject the claim that House Bill 1011 itself is discriminatory legislation. We resist any attacks on sex-based spaces as long as the sex-based oppression of women by men continues.
