We OBJECT to Harper ISD’s Paving Project

The Issue

The Harper ISD School board is discussing a “paving project” regarding paving over our existing practice field by the elementary school.

Not only would paving over the entirety of the field cost $245,000, there would be ADDITIONAL money required to establish  electricity, lighting, protect existing sewage lines and cap off existing irrigation lines.

This project would not only cost the community well over a quarter of a million dollars, it would TAKE AWAY the ONLY location our youth teams have to practice!

Taking action NOW is imminent, as they have discussed paving as early as THIS SPRING. By signing this petition, you are helping the effort to STAND UP FOR OUR CHILDREN and our dollars that could be allocated to one of the many other school facility pain points that glare at us in desperation.

UPDATE: Petition readers have asked the reasoning behind the board’s discussion to pave over the field. During the September board meeting, it was asked what reason for paving  was more important than the other, the answer was that NONE of these reasonings were more important than the other.

REASONS:

1- The Band will have a paved place to practice.

2- Additional Parking

3- Ease elementary pickup line safety concerns.

***My creation of the Paving Project’s Petition has led some community members to feel like the petition is counterproductive to supporting our school board.

I PERSONALLY sat in last months meeting. There WAS objection to the project. There WERE members who expressed CONCERN. There WERE members who asked questions. There WERE members who said flat out that they felt like it was an unnecessary project. This petition was MEANT to BACK those concerns AND the board members whose opinion fell in line with mine, and CLEARLY many of yours. Period.
