WE NEED DOORS

WE NEED DOORS
The Issue
Bathrooms should be a place where students and staff can have a moment of privacy and security, be it to freshen up or perhaps take a breath from a hectic school day. Oak Park River Forest High School's decision to remove bathroom doors disregards these basic needs and inadvertently contributes to an atmosphere of anxiety and distress among students.
Many have been victims of harassment, and no one should have to fear of this taking place at school due to no doors on the bathrooms. This factor increases anxiety and fear in students as they never know who is quietly, and possibly even dangerously, invading their privacy. Additionally, this makes the school environment feel unsafe. The absence of doors in school bathrooms not only compromises privacy but also exposes students to potential risks and uncomfortable situations that can significantly hinder their well-being and ability to focus on education.
Research indicates that a lack of privacy in schools can lead to increased stress levels and negatively impact students' mental health. Studies show that students who do not feel safe at school are more likely to underperform academically and miss classes frequently, which can affect their long-term educational outcomes.
Reinstalling bathroom doors is a straightforward solution that would immediately enhance the safety and comfort of all students. Students would be able to use the facilities without fear of intrusion or harassment, creating a more respectful and supportive school environment where everyone can thrive.
We urge the leadership of Oak Park River Forest High School to recognize the importance of the student’s right to privacy and safety. Reinstating the bathroom doors is not only a simple fix but a necessary step towards fostering a nurturing and secure educational environment for all. Join us in making this crucial change for the betterment of our students' daily lives. Please sign this petition and support a safer, more dignified school setting for everyone.
