We need a Moratorium on Short-Term Rentals, Time Shares, and New Subdivisions

We need a Moratorium on Short-Term Rentals, Time Shares, and New Subdivisions
The Issue
Hilton Head Island, known for its serene environment, rich cultural heritage, and close-knit community, faces a critical threat from unregulated growth. The recent surge in short-term rentals, time shares, and new subdivisions is altering the essence of our beloved Island, risking the unique characteristics that residents and visitors cherish. The Town Council must take immediate action to protect Hilton Head Island’s distinct character by enacting a moratorium on these developments.
Rising numbers of short-term rentals have led to increased traffic, noise pollution, and a strain on local resources, fundamentally disrupting the tranquility that has defined Hilton Head for decades. Time shares and new subdivisions further exacerbate these issues.
The preservation of Hilton Head Island’s environmental integrity is equally paramount. Our beach ecosystems, maritime forests, and carefully maintained parks require protection from the potential adverse environmental effects that come with unchecked growth.
Moreover, the cultural fabric of Hilton Head Island, enriched by the Gullah traditions and historical landmarks, deserves safeguarding from over-commercialization. Our community's identity and local businesses should thrive in a balanced environment, not be overshadowed by transient tourism and speculative developments.
The Town Council has the power to enact policies that ensure growth aligns with the values and needs of our community. A comprehensive and thoughtfully designed moratorium is essential to review and establish guidelines that manage growth responsibly while maintaining the charm and appeal that make Hilton Head distinctive and special.
The Town Council decided recently to assess whether a moratorium should be enacted. The problem is that town officials say it will take ONE YEAR to make that determination. After that, the issue will be debated for many months before any final decision is reached. By then, it will be too late, since there are only 600 acres of undeveloped land on Hilton Head now.
The community must come together and urge the Town Council to act before it is too late. Please show your support for a sustainable future on Hilton Head Island by signing this petition. Together, we can steer our community towards a model of development that honors our past, enriches our present, and safeguards our future.
